Travellers return to Risley
TRAVELLERS have returned to the spot they were ordered to leave by the council five months ago.
The group, which has set up camp off Silver Lane, Risley, left the site in April this year after Warrington Borough Council secured an order from Warrington Magistrates Court.
But nearby residents were despaired to see the travellers have returned in the last week and the situation is ‘worse than it has ever been’.
One disgruntled homeowner added: “There are more than 35 caravans parked on the public footpath completely blocking it.
“There are also horseboxes parked on the other side of the road and their associated vehicles parked all over Silver Lane.
“It is totally impassable by vehicle and it would be impossible to now drive down Silver Lane.”
Residents are now waiting to see what action the council will take next.

if these cannot be provided remove the items until ownership can be proved.
If this policy were to implemented by the police I don't think we would see the travellers in the town again.
Just a thought

A visit from the law asking for receipts might send them elsewhere sharpish...

Surely it must be possible to obtain some form of injunction with a power of arrest for breaking it.
If the lane is impassable then can the Police request that they move and if the travellers refuse arrest them for wilful obstruction of the highway?
The real pain is the fact that the problems caused by such groups do not get solved - at best they get moved so that they just become somebody elses problem - the only long term solution is for authorities to have the power, and the will, to act so quickly and decisively in moving them on that their only true option is to change their lifestyle.

If 35 of us parked on the footpath near to the police station and blocked the footpath then i feel sure that we would be prosecuted yet theses travellers are not.
Are you advocating that it is okay for them to do this? Are you aware of the costs to clean up after them? Presumably you don't have this problem near you wherever you are?
However if you are indeed a council tax payer then you are equally being affected.

Melonfish you have completely missed the point.

i actually live a stones throw from them, i am aware of the costs of cleaning up after them and the like but its not enough to just get irate and force them to move on, should we not be sorting out area's for them to at least try and settle and make a life or is it that warrington is still to snobby (in spite of the fighting and a cop getting beaten with a stilletto) to consider them desirable to have around. got get frothy mouthed at someone else man and instead of propagating the problem be constructive and help with a solution. its coming up to winter, its bloody cold in a van/caravan you know.

Maybe if the police asked the travellers to see the receipts or paid invoices for equipment ie generators, caravans,
if these cannot be provided remove the items until ownership can be proved.

If I remember correctly, a number of years ago, the police arrived on a local traveller site with a search warrant and a list of stolen items.
They moved like rats from a sinking ship!!

Are you sure you are not actually on Silver Lane at the moment freezing in your caravan?
No I don't want them, they put nothing into our economy and are a financial burden.
They choose their life, I have to respect that, however I do not have to agree that they get away with breaking the law.

Their vehicles also had Irish plates.
So that country would be the Republic of Ireland then.
Glad to help.

Melonfish, have you ever been in a caravan in winter especially newer ones like they have ? We've have and we've got friends who spend the whole of early Dec to end of Jan in their touring van with an awning up too and it's lovely and warm and cosy. No elec hook up or luxuries either just gas bottles and a generator. Don't feel sorry for the travellers Melonfish as the ones with the flashy cans and big cars especially have a great life and love living like they do which is why they do it. Why should we help them or feel sorry for them cos they don;t feel sorry for us and would hate to live like we do and who can blame them.
