THIS is the brutal attack on a swan by two dogs in Sankey Valley Park captured on film by a shocked bystander.

People watched in horror as the female swan, which had been sitting on her eggs, was repeatedly mauled by what is believed to be a pitbull and a Staffordshire bull terrier.

A fisherman was among those who tried to separate the animals from the bird. But RSPCA officers could not save the swan due to its horrific wing and neck injuries.

David Ashton, aged 39, of Woolston, was fishing with a friend when the pitbull-type dog pounced on the swan at around 5.30pm on Friday.

He said: "A white pitbull and a brown Staffy were off their leads and the white dog went straight for the nest.

"He grabbed the female swan and started ragging it but the swan managed to get away and the dogs and their owner carried on walking.

"But about half-an-hour later they came back. The dogs were still off their leads and the pitbull went straight for the nest again."

The swan managed to free itself and made a desperate bid for safety in the canal only to be followed by the white dog.

Mr Ashton said: "She managed to get back on her nest but the dog dragged her out of the reeds and on to the footpath where the brown dog also started attacking it.

"The dog took no notice of its owner. It was well out of control."

The owner, who has not been identified, did make attempts to call his dogs off and was seen to jump in the river to try to separate the white dog from the swan, which is a protected species.

The swans and their eggs, of which only two remained out of seven, had created great interest among visitors and had sparked calls from Whittle Hall councillors for the restoration of resident rangers in an effort to protect the nest, which was in a vulnerable position on the canal bank.

Dr Alex Symonds, aged 56, from Callands had gone with his wife to visit the swans and also witnessed the attack, capturing the horrific scene on film.

He said: "It could have been a child. We are all so upset about this and want to see the owner prosecuted."

An RSPCA spokesman said: "This was a very sad incident which must have caused great suffering to the swan involved, and the RSPCA would like to hear from anyone who saw what happened, or knows anything about the dogs allegedly involved." The RSPCA can be contacted on 0300 1234 999 in confidence.

Police are investigating.

Next time it could be a child.

What is it about so many Warringtonians and macho dogs?

I am continually amazed at the amount of careless dog owners on Sankey Valley. Only on Sunday our dog was bitten by another dog whose owner seemed to be intoxicated and stood chatting away to his friends whilst his dog follow us, our kids and our dog (who was on his lead) over the bride and proceeded to get in to a fight with our dog. Luckily I was able to send the kids further on with my friend whilst I endeavoured to seperate the animals, had I been on my own - who knows what might have happened. Why can't people put their dogs on a lead when they are around other animals / kids? Its not difficult and better safe than sorry. We've seen this man on numerous occassions and those dogs are always walking him! For the record we have a Staffy who is fabulous, it's rarely the dog that's the problem it usually the owners and their inability to control their animals.

Bring back dog licensing and charge owners £1000 for a license to own one of these types of dog. The dog and it's owner should both be destroyed. Vicious scum.

I cannot understand why the pit bull was off the lead in the first place? This breed comes under the dangerous dog act and should never be let off the lead.

I am a dog owner myself and would never let my dogs off the lead near any other animals or children. I completely agree that Licences need to be brought back. I also think that the RSPCA should have alot more authority like the Americans do.

There are several pictures in the paper, all very clear so that someone’s bound to recognise the owner and or the dogs.

What amazes me is that having had the dogs attack the swan once, this idiot brings them back half an hour later to finish off the job.

The guy should be prosecuted for his uncaring neglect.

Whilst this incident is going on, why is this 'witness' taking photos instead of helping the guy, if it could of been stopped sooner maybe the swan could of been saved. And why did he let the man just walk away?

If you can't control your dog(s), don't let them off the lead, simple as. They are a potential danger to others their children/pets and general wildlife if you have no control. A well trained dog is a dog that does not need not to be on a lead. Owners need to take responsibility.

As other posters put, it is the fault of the owner not the dog, and this type of dog needs a strong owner, of which this owner isn't.

Some adults today obviously think it is okay to let their dogs run wild just like some do their kids, thus ruining it for the rest. People need to take responsibility.

You can't blame the witnesses for not wanting to get involved. Would you want to be on the receiving end of an out of control pit bull? At least they got some photos so that this idiot can be identified.

The maximum penalty for killing a swan is six months in prison and I hope they send him down for the full stretch. Then there's the fact that he owns a pit bull which is banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

There are notices everywhere warning people to stay away from the swan's nest and this clown walks past it with two dangerous dogs off their leads. One attacks the swan and then he walks past again half an hour later, with the dogs still off the lead, to finish the job. There's no doubt he is negligent and I hope they really punish him for it.

As has been said already, what if it was a child?

The common quote heard from dog owners on Sankey Valley is " its alright the dog doesn't bite. It'll be alright." Well obviously on this ocasion it wasn't I agree with previous posters, Bring back dog licensing and strict guidelines and punishment for those who don't adhere. I have 2 small children, both of which hide behind me or my wife whenever dogs come near them. They don't need to be terrorised by some vicious animal when on a walk down to the canal. Its not just pit bulls, staffs or dobermans, all dogs can be vicious. and what fo you get from the owner........"its alright, it won't bite them" and they crap everywhere too.

The eggs had disappeared by Saturday morning apparently. It’s actually illegal to remove the eggs from the nest which is why they were left on Friday night after the incident. We were hoping the male might have been able to hatch them. As far as I’m aware though the male swan has now left the area – I haven’t seen him all week. Not surprising as he’s lost his mate and eggs.
I’d like to say a big thank you to the RSPCA guys who attended last Friday. I was concerned that the swan would be left suffering over night but the inspector swiftly and very sensitively handled the situation.
