Alexander Sinclair at home in Lymm with his art
Alexander Sinclair at home in Lymm with his art

HE has travelled all over the world but it was not until Alexander Sinclair visited Lymm a year ago that he found true inspiration.

Now the Scottish artist has made the village his home and his house-come-studio on Reddish Lane has been a hive of activity ever since.

"I have lived in all the main cities but the first time I saw Lymm I fell in love. I thought: This is a place I can relax and a nice, calm place to do my work'," he said.

Alexander describes his art as bright, colourful and cheerful' in which he utilises transparent and luminous paint.

His body of work of around 200 creations ranges from intricately detailed small pieces the size of a cigarette packet to large, vivid paintings as well as colourful clocks.

"There is something for everybody and I would describe it as unique. I am 100 per cent focused on what I do and I am a very creative person," he added.

The 41-year-old was first inspired to paint 10 years ago when a friend bought him a canvas and paint.

"I went to a place in the countryside and painted a picture and it was absolutely terrible. But I kept at it and got a passion for it," said the self-taught artist.

Since leaving Scotland, Alexander has lived and worked in London, Germany, Amsterdam, Los Angeles and Greater Manchester before settling on Lymm.

In London he played drums in a band and in Amsterdam he was involved with a radio show for three and a half years where he recorded around 600 to 700 songs.

"I went to a place in the countryside and painted a picture and it was absolutely terrible. But I kept at it and got a passion for it."

But when he was promised a contract that fell through, Alexander thought it was time for a change.

In Los Angeles, he went to Hollywood and stayed in the house from the Halloween film and wrote an unpublished book in Palm Springs but found the American lifestyle was not for him.

Alexander added: "It was nice but everyone there seemed to be motivated by money. I just love my art and get a pleasure out of showing it to people. That gives me a real boost."

He then moved to Greater Manchester for 14 years before he discovered Lymm.

Alexander also recently got the chance to show off his work in Lymm at a high profile exhibition at the village hall, which he described as the biggest challenge of his career.

"It wasn't easy," he said.

"But I was determined to do it and to do it well and I could handle the stress.

"People I know from Scotland, Amsterdam and Germany came to the exhibition and it was the first time I had sold paintings to my friends. It was also the first time I was asked to sign my paintings.

"I'm a bit of a workaholic but I'm also very house proud which can be a difficult combination when you work from home - so it was nice to see my work in another environment and get it out on show."

Alexander is commissioned to look round a house and then create paintings or other mediums to fill the space. He then gives the owner a choice and gets to work.
