Winwick WI By Lesley Leighton The WI met as usual on the first Tuesday of the month but it proved to be a rather unusual and very enjoyable April meeting. At the eleventh hour the Committee found that the scheduled speaker would not be appearing and they were left with no choice but to resort to home grown entertainment. Our very resourceful secretary Pauline Sefton produced a projector and screen and showed us her holiday slides – but what a holiday and such beautiful slides. In 1976 she and her husband took part in a trek over the Pyrenees from France to Spain. We marvelled at her endurance and the wonderful scenery, flora and fauna.
Pauline’s holiday memories led to a lively discussion about our own recent experiences, including a cruise to Petra in Jordan, and a visit to the Arctic Circle to see the Northern Lights, but the most exciting account was by Vicki Morris who has recently undertaken a “driving experience” at Oulton Park. After a practice circuit in a BMW M3 with a tutor, she got into a single-seater Formula 3 car and raced to 130 mph! She said she cannot wait to do it again.
The Walking Group gave an amusing account of their March trip to Liverpool which entailed very little walking! They took the train, then the underground, using lifts and escalators, to the new Museum of Liverpool, (a landmark building on the famous waterfront) where they did walk round and can recommend the experience. Their next outing will be by bus to Leigh to take a canal-side walk to Pennington Flash.
The next WI meeting is on May 1 at 7.30 in St Oswald’s Church Hall. Other future events include a summer party on May 15 at the General Elliot, and special Jubilee celebrations at the June Meeting when we will have a street party, everyone wearing red, white and blue.
