JOAN Jarvis, our president, opened the meeting and welcomed two visitors Eleyne Hutchinson and Wendy Williams and thanked Barbara Hartley for the lovely roses for the president’s table.

Our speaker for the afternoon should have been Andy Reid but unfortunately he was indisposed.

Joan then gave birthday congratulations to Fanny Hainsworth, Jean Coulton, Ann Brew, Myrtle Gerrard and Shirley Bennett who all had birthdays in July and August. Joan had also celebrated her birthday in July.

Brenda, our outings organiser, told us about a visit to the Anderton Lift on August 19, Phantom of the Opera on September 9 and You Are Never Too Old, a play at the Brindley Theatre on October 27. She also spoke about trips to Knutsford on September 24 and Chester Cathedral on November 18.

Margaret, our Mosslands Group representative, told us of the autumn meeting on October 28.

Shirley, our secretary, gave details of the Cheshire Federation autumn meeting in October where the speaker would be Anne Diamond; the recording of the centenary meeting held at the Albert Hall in June which is now available online, and a book entitled An Illustrated History of the WI.

Other items of correspondence were displayed.

Joan read out a card from Isobel Harris (who had recently been in hospital for 10 weeks) thanking those people who had sent cards and visited her while she was ill.

After tea and biscuits, served by Lynn Bates and Lydia Howard, our members enjoyed a quiz with clues concerning the names of different sweets we had all enjoyed as children. Prizes went to Brenda Pinion, Margaret Barron and Lorraine Yates.

The raffle prize winners this month were Isobel Harris, Brenda Pinion, Janis Porter, Ann Brew, Helen Slattery and Margaret Barron.

Our next meeting is on the afternoon of September 15 and our speaker will be Keith Vigurs ‘The Mystery Shopper’. Visitors are always welcome.
