Personal Overview - A local resident prior to University, returned as MP for this safe seat after a controversial selection process where a NEC short list was imposed to include names other than local activists. Has the background of a long standing party insider and loyalist who was a special advisor in the Department of Culture, Media & Sport to Rt. Hon. Chris Smith MP. Gained a junior ministerial position at the start of Labour's third term in office and was swiftly promoted to Minister of State level. Made still further progress in the June 2007 reshuffle, entering the Cabinet in Gordon Brown's first administration and gaining promotion in the subsequent mini reshuffle in January 2008. Gained promotion to one of the big Departments of State (Health) at the June 2009 reshuffle, but was only in the role for less than year before the 2010 election. Announced in May 2010 that he would be putting his name forward to stand for the party leadership. Despite not winning the leadership election, he raised his profile within the party and maintained a senior Shadow Cabinet post.
