Dog owners must beware

IT was with great concern that I read about dog walking bans in local parks.

I am dismayed to find that my council is proposing to use dog control orders to introduce draconian restrictions on dogs and their owners. This is certainly not what was expected to happen when the act was drafted, and not what Parliament intended when it was approved.

Dog owners please note, local authorities are only obliged to embark on a consultation process that involves placing an advert in the local newspaper. This means that a lot of people will be unaware of the proposals.

However, prior to being able to enforce these dog control orders, local authorities must consult members of the public, as they can influence, or at the very least be aware, of what orders are being introduced in their area.

I am concerned that some local authorities may take a disproportionate response to the irresponsible behaviour of a minority of dog owners at the expense of the majority.

Dog owners act now. Contact your local councillors and your MP. I am in the process of preparing a petition for the dog walkers of Woolston Park and I urge you to do the same in your area, before it is too late.

I play footie - the man between the sticks. Its no fun diving around in dog sh*t when we play in local parks. I own a dog too. He poops I scoop. A dog not on a lead is a dog not in control. Designated runs are available. Use them.If people are not up to speed with current affairs then the problem is theirs. We have more media now than ever before informing us of what where how why and when.

The people who do not pick up will not follow the "keep on the lead" rule either. It is the responsible owners who have well trained dogs, on and off the lead who DO pick up the poop whose dogs will suffer.

Those who flaunt the law will continue to do so.Keeping dogs on leads will not change this scenario Big Ed.

I would be interested in knowing where the designated dog runs are in your area as there are none in my mine.

Better dog owners are forced to keep their animals on a lead and clean up after them than some kid gets ill from falling in their muck. I don't see why I should have to 'scoop' pitches before a match just because a dog owner can't be bothered. Better still, maybe the dog owners would like to wash the kit after the kids have found the bit we missed? If all dog owners took responsibilty for their animals there wouldn't be a need for these proposals.
