Follow the lead of the USA

YOUR coverage of the Garry Newlove murder trial and the many comments regarding drunken youths prompts me to ask two things.

Firstly, why can't we follow the lead of the USA with regard to alcohol, ie not allowed in the streets, punishable by stiff fines and detention for persistent offenders?

Secondly, let us return to the days of restricted hours of opening for licenced premises.

If Cheshire police believe alcohol is a matter of grave concern this is surely worth trying.

Finally, have all the local and national newspapers considered a concerted campaign against the politicians who refuse to implement laws that actually deter crime by offering proper sentencing?

It would seem from Adam Swellings' record that he should have been serving a custodial sentence for his repeated breaches of his restraining order, rather than being left on the streets to continue his aggressive behaviour towards law-abiding citizens DAVID SPRUCE High Legh

The good old crime free USA. Perhaps we should follow their lead and let them spend money on ammunition instead of booze. At least they'lll ne able to shoot straight.

Whilst I agree with David Spruce regarding the USA's rules of being in illegal possession of alcohol on the streets could be a deterrant but who will be responsible for catching and apprehending such offenders, certainly not the present manning of the poice on our streets, which in my opinion is where the real problem lies, there are just not enough police on the streets of Warrington.
Another point if these thugs and hooligans are caught drinking on the street, what sort of sentence would they receive in the courts? If the likes of Swelling cannot be held in custody for a serious assault charge, what sentence will be given for the charge of illegal possesion of alcohol? A slap on the wrist ? I am all in favour of his latter suggestion, it is time the voice of the people was heard and driven home to these soft politicians that what the public want is for stiffer sentences and to stop treating the thugs with the soft treatment approach.

Quattro - perhaps you should come spend some time in the USA and witness first hand how there are NO kids hanging round street corners and NO kids steaming drunk in parks every weekend. The USA isn't perfect and certainly not crime free, but I've lived here long enough to notice that the kids seem to have a fundamental quality that the kids in the UK don't - respect.

I have yet to meet, but I am sure they exist, a rude, obnoxious "teenager" around where I live, let alone one who would kick you to death.

Quattro, How negative, Christian is right, I've never seen rude, ignorant on the streets in the USA. Having lived in the UK, I can report that the country is full of Teenagers with no respect for many things that really matter. I hope that from pages like this come positive comments, and actions, not negative comments Quattro :-(.

After reading this letter and the comments left I would like to point out that not all warringtons teenagers are 'steaming drunk' on parks at weekends and not all of us are violent. It is infact a small minority and their actions have nothing to do with their age.It is completely unfair and unjustified to say that 'the country is full of teenagers with no respect' unless of course you know every single teenager in the UK. It makes me so angry when I read all these articles in the media about how terrible Britains Youth is... yet it is never reported when we do anything good. But i guess that just doesn't make good news does it?
