GEARS of War 2 is probably the closest you’ll get to feeling like you’re ‘playing a film’, this year.
Utterly immersive, especially in high definition, the Xbox 360-exclusive game has a stirring intro and it just gets better from there.
Once again, you play Marcus Fenix, part of the elite ‘Delta’ squad — a marine so gruff that his limbs look like tree trunks and his voice so gravelly it puts 24’s Jack Bauer to shame.
An epic struggle in a war-torn Earth, the game continues the fight against the Locust Horde, an alien threat that emerged from underground.
True to the ethos of sequels, this feels bigger and vaster than its predecessor. It is reminiscent of Halo 3 in the sense that you feel like one man surrounded by all these cataclysmic events around you.
As you can probably gauge from its name, Gears of War 2 is still anchored in its testosterone-soaked combat but the game begs to give you more.
Expect a deeper plot... and more surprisingly, some emotional heft.
