Star Wars fans have gone into meltdown after the new trailer was released for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

But apart from the obvious excitement of hearing that theme music again, what were the best moments from the trailer that had everyone wishing it was December already?

A desert scene from the trailer (Star Wars/screenshot)

The Episode VII preview opened on a desert landscape that seemed more than a little bit menacing – especially when a closer look at a crashed Star Destroyer and X-Wing seemed to show the fall-out of a battle between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance.

In one spooky scene, Darth Vader’s mangled mask popped up – who is responsible for recovering it, and why have they got hold of it? Or could it even mean he is still alive?

Oscar Isaac (Star Wars/screenshot)

Last night’s opening of the Star Wars convention revealed that Oscar Isaac, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley would be playing the lead roles in the next instalment of the sci-fi adventure, and we got a sneak peek at Oscar’s character Poe Dameron zooming through the skies as a pilot.

We also saw Daisy’s Rey and John’s Finn helping each other out as they appeared to be fleeing an attack, and Daisy told fans at the convention that scavenger Rey’s adventure would begin when she met John’s stormtrooper.

One of the big clues to what we can expect from the film was a lightsaber being passed from an unknown person to someone else not seen on screen. Fans have speculated that it could have been Luke Skywalker passing the baton to his sister Leia, or even that he may have a child as the voiceover talks about the force passing from father to son and daughter.

The trailer closes on an excited-looking Han Solo (Harrison Ford) saying to Chewbacca: “Chewie… we’re home.”

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is released in cinemas on December 18.
