The Wombats - Glitterbug

FANS of Liverpool indie rock band The Wombats are sure to notice their continued transition towards electronic dance vibes with their new album, Glitterbug.

With their energetic and techno sounds, the band's frontman Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy, bassist Tord Øverland Knudsen and drummer Dan Haggis prove they are just as ambitious as ever.

Collaborating with producer Mark Crew, who has worked with Bastille, most of the songs on Glitterbug were inspired by Murphy’s experiences in LA and are pretty energetic.

With a lot of synthesisers, catchy lyrics and head-nodding beats, the album as a whole makes you want to jump start to summer, enjoying campfires, friends and booze.

Tracks such as ‘Give Me A Try’ and ‘Be Your Shadow’ emulate the sounds of more mainstream dance/ pop songs which you can imagine being badly remixed in a nearby club.

So it’s hard to consider The Wombats as being a ‘rock’ band anymore.

Tracks such as ‘Your Body Is A Weapon’ and ‘The English Summer’ are definitely more rocky.

With more raw drum and guitar sounds, they are more relatable to their debut album ‘A Guide to Love, Loss and Desperation’ from 2007.

The band has certainly matured and progressed throughout their albums, however they are lacking in variety as the tempo and sounds are very similar on each track on ‘Glitterbug’.

Having said this, as a whole it does work. So if you’re into more techno and dance vibes, be sure to give it a listen.
