LIVERPOOL’S comedy circuit is now living up to the famous Beatles song, Eight Days A Week.

Hot Water Comedy Club has launched in Seel Street and although the team are still searching for that eighth day there is live stand-up at the venue seven days a week.

I interviewed the club’s promoters Paul and Binty Blair and resident compere Paul Smith about the purpose-built venue.

When talking to Binty I could really sense the passion he has for the place.

Even the smallest details have been thought about to design and create the perfect experience from the moment you walk through the door.

Hot Water has an urban street theme running throughout it.

Binty said: “We have really got creative with the design so when walking through the door the floor will look like a road, the walls will feature cityscape designs around the bar and food areas, including a park feature with artificial grass.

“Other features will include a real street light and traffic light which will also be used to indicate when people should enter the theatre and a night sky feature spray-painted on the ceiling to give a real atmosphere.

“There will also be second performance area for live music and dining and lots of seating.

“In the centre of the venue is the theatre room which has steps going up and then going down as you walk in to give a underground basement comedy club feel like you would find in New York.

“The street theme also continues in the main theatre room. The room has a low ceiling to give a nice intimate feel.”

Meanwhile, Paul Blair and Paul Smith say they want it to be more than a club, envisaging it as a hub for those on the circuit and their fans and supporters. I’m hoping to perform there soon myself.

Compere Paul will be working with new talent by sharing his knowledge and experience with them, writing workshops and hosting comedy courses as well as performing in the club himself.

‘I’d like to think in five or six years you could have a club like this in Warrington’

Brothers Paul and Binty will be managing the club day-to-day.

They have also designed creative room spaces including podcast booths, camera facilities for gallery shots and a green screen for YouTube videos effects.

The club is also set to play host to recognisable faces from the TV and club circuit of comedians from around the UK and internationally.

It is hoped that touring shows, Edinburgh previews, work-in-progress shows and new material shows will all become commonplace at the city centre venue.

The time is now for something like this as I think Liverpool can sustain it with the city becoming an expanding part of the north west.

For comedians on the circuit this is something new to fall in love.

And I’d like to think in five or six years you could have a club like this in Warrington if you look at the way the town is developing.
