A ONE-MAN band who vowed to write and record a new song every day for a year has completed his challenge.

Orford resident David Carey, who makes music under the name DC Electric Band, recorded his first song on November 3, 2014, and posted his last track on Monday.

The process involved the former Sir Thomas Boteler student getting up early each morning to switch on the news or surf the internet until he found a theme.

And it was all for a good cause with David raising money for blood cancer charity, Bloodwise.

He said: "If I went on a quiz show now about politics or current affairs I’d be number one man. I’ve absorbed so much news over these past 12 months.

"After the Charlie Hebdo attack I did a few tracks about 'Je Suis Charlie'.

"They were really successful as it was capturing something happening that was really big "I also did a song about ‘King of the Jungle’ Carl Fogarty and I posted the track to him on New Year’s Eve on Twitter.

"He retweeted it and I got more than 1,000 plays in three hours. But the thing was from one day to the next I didn’t know what was going to spark my imagination.

"Normally it would be something I’ve reacted to whether it’s something funny or something that really gets my goat.

"The success for me was getting up every day and being sufficiently charged by the day’s events to get something done."

But before Dave can relax he will hosting a fundraiser at Rylands Recreation Club in Gorsey Lane this Saturday when all 365 of his one-minute tracks will be played back-to-back between 4pm and 10pm.

As well as being a final push for donations to Bloodwise, the event will act as a thank you to Dave's supporters.

Dave gave up alcohol, his social life and even a holiday with his wife Sharron to complete the challenge and said words of encouragement kept him going.

He added: "The songs weren't serious pieces of music or anything like that. It was just a laugh.

"Some of the songs were satirical, a bit weird or a sideways glance at something.

"But they still took time and energy to do them so when people listened to them and said ‘well done’, little things that kept me motivated and kept me moving on.

"It’s been tougher than I thought but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it.

"One of the toughest things was not going on holiday. My wife went away without me which felt bizarre.

"It also felt weird seeing the seasons change through the window and not going out.

"Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve were very odd because my focus was still on recording a track.

"Once I'd finished, my mate said lock the studio door and don’t go in for a month but I’m in here now looking at my guitar thinking I need to do something..."
