STEP back in time to discover how the First World War impacted on the people of Warrington.

Chester based drama group, Theatre in the Quarter, will explore the bravery and camaraderie of those caught in the conflict a century ago.

The free commemorative performance called Your Country Needs You will be performed on four occasions at Market Gate on Saturday as part of Warrington Festival.

The 25 minute piece is inspired by Theatre In the Quarter’s successful First World War project, Over By Christmas, last year, which toured railway stations across Cheshire and the north west as well as London.

Your Country Needs You combines nostalgic songs of the wartime period with real accounts from Warrington people.

The theatre group worked with professional actors and creative teams as well as people of all ages from Warrington for the original piece.

It was commissioned by Warrington Borough Council and Culture Warrington and is based on research by Janice Hayes author of Warrington And The Great War.

Janice, who is also archives manager at Warrington Museum, teamed up Theatre in the Quarter writer Helen Newall to create the production while artistic director Matt Baker came up with the musical arrangements.

Matt said: "It is an honour to be commissioned by Warrington Borough Council and Culture Warrington to highlight the lives and experiences of the town’s people during the First World War.

"Last year’s tour of railway stations was incredibly emotional for us, and it is very special to now be invited to create a piece of work specifically for and about the people of Warrington."

Cllr Kate Hannon, executive member for leisure, community and culture at Warrington Borough Council added: "It’s wonderful to be able to commission work that draws inspiration from the lives and World War experiences of the people of Warrington.

"Your Country Needs You is a wonderful piece of street theatre that will bring together members of the community, of all ages and performance abilities."

Theatre in the Quarter will present Your Country Needs You at Market Gate at 11.30am, 12.30pm, 2pm and 3.30pm on Saturday.

The free production is part of Warrington Festival, a month long programme of events across the town celebrating sports, culture and entertainment.
