PRISON Break fans are used to the series' many twists and turns and complex, over-the-top plot lines.

But even the show's writers and producers may have their work cut out with the 'reboot' next year.

Paul Scheuring's Prison Break finished its run after four seasons in 2009 and its ending was pretty conclusive.

So much so that the main character Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) died in a bittersweet finale.

Knowing that he was dying from a brain tumour, Michael sacrificed himself to save his prison doctor girlfriend Sara Tancredi (Sarah Wayne Callies).

But in a surprising, and some might say cynical move, those events are set to be ignored with the new episodes taking place after the original series and with Michael alive and well.

Dana Walden of Fox has said that the 10-episode mini series will 'answer whatever questions audience may have of Scofield's fate as well as the other characters'.

It may not be as daft as it sounds because Prison Break has always been celebrated for its absurd and outrageous twists.

Michael's girlfriend Sara was thought to be dead in season three only for it to be a bluff.

The original Prison Break saw Michael rescue his brother Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell), who is falsely accused of murder.

With Michael using his tattooed body as blueprints to the jail, it was ridiculous to begin and just got crazier as the brothers got caught up in various conspiracies

But it wasn't so much the show's plot that drew you in but the tension that ratcheted up with each episode.

So maybe some half hearted excuse for why Michael is still alive could be forgiven after all.

The same studio brought Jack Bauer back for another 10 episodes of 24 and that worked really well.

Prison Break's return is thought to have been made possible by its popularity on streaming video services like Netflix, where a new, younger audience has discovered it.

It joins other planned revivals like The X-Files and Twin Peaks.

The show's stars Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell are already working together on superhero series, Legends of Tomorrow, and have said they will team up for Prison Break straight after that.

Filming is expected to start early next year and it could be on screens by next summer.

And if characters returning from the dead is becoming the latest trend for TV here's a few suggestions for studio bosses – Walter White from Breaking Bad, Ned Stark from Game of Thrones and Wild Bill from Deadwood.

Fingers crossed.
