DARREN Day is coming to Warrington after starring in a Tarantino-esque short film which will premiere at the Pyramid in September.

The actor, singer and TV personality teamed up with Bewsey filmmaker David McCollom to star in a 20 minute feature called What's The Story?

David, who runs DMC Media, has been teaching filmmaking to people in recovery from drug addiction for six years and holds workshops at the CRI Pathways to Recovery centre in Bold Street.

The 47-year-old's film with Darren is one of nine which have been specially created by some of his students for a cinema experience on September 2.

David worked on What's The Story? with Christopher Finn, scriptwriter Gerry Linford and Geoff Owens, who was involved with The Fast and The Furious and Captain America.

It is about a dodgy photographer and £20,000 that goes missing in a taxi.

The project has been nine months in the making with Darren joining the team three months ago after being contacted on Facebook.

"It was the script that sold it to Darren," said David, of Gladstone Mews.

"It's Tarantino-esque with twists and turns and it's very fast paced.

"Darren was fantastic and so down to earth. He'll be there on the night with his wife and agent and he's said he loves the film.

"It was brilliant to work with a celebrity. At first I was just staring at him but now we text each other and I emailed him the other day and he said he was on a cruise with Kevin Kennedy."

Thirteen years ago David regularly used heroin, crack cocaine and barbiturates and lost part of his left leg to gangrene from an infection caused by injecting himself.

He also lost the use of all of his fingers, apart from his right index finger and thumb, after scolding himself with boiling water when he was out of it.

But David completely turned his life around in 2002 and even got an award from renowned British filmmaker Ken Loach for a film he made at the University of Central Lancashire about his life.

David added: "The idea is to bring together people recovering from addiction to do something creative.

"They have fun and let their hair down but also learn new skills and face their fears of being in front of the camera.

"We have family members saying they're so glad to have a son or daughter or brother or sister back."

David is also in the process of striking a deal with five cinemas in the north west, including Odeon in Westbrook, to show a trailer he has made about drug addiction recovery services.

The film, which received £10,000 in Lottery funding, shows a girl who has a conversation with a 'shadow of her former self' during a taxi ride.

The premiere for What's The Story? is at the Pyramid on September 2 and there will be public screenings at a later date.

David said: "At times I've felt like giving up and it just shows that with perseverance things like this can happen.

"My dream would be to do a TV series about recovery which wouldn't be like these shows like Benefit Street.

"It would show the positive side. I know from first hand experience that there are so many people out there leading by example."
