In the corner of the Old Fish Market just above eye level, it is sometimes difficult to spot Ask.

But if you are sat by the window enjoying the Italian restaurant’s elavated position you start to realise it has an enviable space.

The view is not quite the Mediterranean, but with plenty usually going on at Golden Square you can while away a few hours people watching.

Ask’s atmosphere can be described as somewhere between relaxed and refined.

We were offered a choice of tables and given the chance to settle in as we looked through the menu over a bowl of nocellara olives.

Drenched in olive oil and basil they were simply divine.

I chose the soufflé fiorentina from the specials menu to start. It was cooked to perfection with a fluffy texture and the fontal cheese flavour was balanced with a bed of spinach.

My partner, a vegetarian, was impressed with the variety of meat-free dishes.

She started with the bruschetta which came with an assortment of roast Mediterranean vegetables, packed with flavour.

For my main, I had the hunters pizza calzone cacciatore with chicken, pancetta, mushrooms, peppers and olives. Each bite was different and the soft crust superb.

My partner went for the lighter fettuccine con verdure, a pasta dish with courgettes, peas, roasted tomatoes, green beans and spinach.

She said she liked the fresh taste and spiciness.

Desserts are also worth making room for if you can squeeze one in. We both enjoyed our honeycomb cheesecake and tiramisu immensely.

Staff were attentive throughout and little touches like chilled beer glasses and extra vigin olive oil on the table were appreciated.
