A LOVE of cake, tea and fine bone china has led to a new venture by Woolston resident Jennifer Perry.

The mum-of-two has set up Room Forty which offers a 1930s-style afternoon tea experience.

But the difference with Jennifer's business is that she and her team come to you with freshly baked afternoon tea delivered to your home, party or workplace served on vintage china.

Washing-up is also included in the price so that customers can immerse themselves in the experience.

Jennifer said: "For me, afternoon tea shouldn't be about rushing about, herding friends and family into a faceless restaurant or hotel and watching the clock.

"The time you spend with people should be treasured. It's time for having fun and spending quality time together, young and old.

"For those who want a more lively party, vintage china lends itself very nicely to transporting guests to another era.

"I love planning parties and a bit of dressing up. Think feather boas, flapper dresses all set to the soundtrack of the music of the 1930s.

"Or why not plan something around the First World War commemoration or the Queen's 90th birthday. Any excuse to celebrate, not that you should need one."

Jennifer got the idea for Room Forty after building up a vast collection of vintage bone china and glass.

The 40-year-old added: "My mum also had an eye for it so I’ve been brought up hunting beautiful crockery in charity shops and at carboot sales.

"The passion unwittingly rubbed off and I am currently seeking out more teapots to add to my collection."

Jennifer went into catering at weddings and corporate events after leaving Lymm High school and prepared for her new role with an afternoon tea course with John Whaite, the winner of the third series of The Great British Bake Off.

She is also following in her mum's footsteps.

Jennifer said: "My mum, Colleen, used to be a baker out of necessity. We were a big family on a budget so she was always making pies, pastries and bread to keep us all full, her hot pot with a crust is legendary.

"I am not sure how much of a help I was then though!

"I love tea and I see food as a way of connecting with people. It’s a great ice breaker and a bridge between ages or cultures."
