IF the revamp of Shadow of the Colossus has got you back in the mood for games that are stripped back and immersive, Fe comes highly recommended.

Swedish studio Zoink’s 3D platform adventure could also be compared to the likes of Journey where it is more of an interactive experience than an overwhelming collection of upgrade options and loadout screens that modern games tend to feature.

The first thing to know about Fe is that it is ‘hands off’ – you basically take on the role of a young cub waking up in a forest glade.

There is no story or dialogue as such. You have to discover and interpret that for yourself, which is part of the joy.

Fe also features some unique gameplay dynamics which focuses on your ability to communicate with other forest animals through song who then help you progress.

If it sounds whimsical it’s because it is and that is matched with a gorgeous, almost psychedelic art style and a classical soundtrack which fits the game’s tone just right.

You also learn the ability to leap up trees to get around at quite a pace and – thanks to your animal pals – your agility gets better as you go along. The only criticism is that the singing mechanic is sometimes overly tricky.

And it is not always clear how to proceed (even though you have a little pet bird that acts as your navigator). But overall the controls are simple and intuitive and the developers do a great job of making you feel like a small part of a big mysterious world where not everything is as it should be.
