TWO generations of children’s BBC will collide when Dick and Dom join forces with Justin Fletcher at Warrington’s Christmas lights switch on.

Justin – best known for his persona Mr Tumble – and Dick and Dom, of In Da Bungalow fame, will be taking to the stage in the Old Fish Market for the festivities on Friday.

Dominic ‘Dom’ Wood told Weekend: “You’ve got the CBeebies generation which is Justin’s lot then you’ve got our rabble which are Da Bungalow generation. So there’s going to be the generation who grew up watching us on Saturday mornings who are in their 20s now.

“It’s lovely that we’re remembered for some of these shows all these years later.

“It’s a nice feeling knowing that what you did over the years is really appreciated for a load of different generations. It’s a very rewarding feeling.”

Double act Dick and Dom have worked with Justin several times in the past – particularly on the family festival circuit – but this is the first time they have done a Christmas event together.

Dom, who presented Are You Smarter than a 10 Year Old, added: “Justin’s great. He gets everyone transfixed. He walks on stage and parents and little ones all just stare at him just completely mesmerised.

“We’ve been doing kids’ TV for about the same amount of time – about 21 years – and we’ve been seeing each other on the circuit for a long time.”

Dom met Richard ‘Dick’ McCourt at the BBC’s White City studios when they were 18 and 19 respectively.

They were both embarking on their dream of becoming a presenter at the same time and instantly hit it off.

Dom said: “We were both the new boys there and had the same things in common in that we wanted to be CBBC presenters since we were kids ourselves.

“So we were both kind of sharing this living dream and we were the same age so we started hanging out as mates anyway.

“We made each other laugh and understood the same things then as time went on we shared a few flats together and 21 years later we’re still best mates.”

Even ‘Gordon the Gopher’ saw the natural chemistry between the pair.

Dom added: “It was a pretty instant thing to the point where the head of CBBC at the time, Paul Smith, recognised this.

“He used to be Gordon the Gopher, would you believe, all those years ago.

“He just saw that something was going on and put us on screen together.

“We were initially put on screen as two separate presenters – Richard and Dominic – and then we did breakfast shows and holiday mornings together and stuff like that. It went really well but then we did our own projects for a while until Paul came into power later on and said: ‘I’d like to hire you as a double act called Dick and Dom’.

“We were like: ‘It sounds interesting. Let’s give it a pop and see what happens’ and here we still are

“We clicked straight away. You can’t really replicate that sort of thing. It doesn’t happen artificially.

“It’s quite an unusual thing – like with twins when they’re able to communicate without speaking. We can sit in a meeting and not say anything and know what each other are thinking which some people can find slightly unusual.”

So why does Dom think that British audiences love a double act?

He said: “You think of Morecambe and Wise or The Two Ronnies and there was nothing better than when they start ‘corpsing’ with each other – laughing at their own jokes.

“You see Ant and Dec and the camaraderie and respect they have for each other and I think ultimately when you watch them or any double act it’s like watching your two best mates having a laugh and it kind of draws you in.”

Dick and Dom will be joining Justin Fletcher for the Christmas lights switch on this Friday at the Old Fish Market from 6pm
