SETTING off on the road to fame was never going to be an easy one.

But as the stage musical of FAME documents the highs and lows of a group of star-struck wannabes as they embark on their quest for stardom, it’s difficult to resist the urge not to jump up and dance along with them.

FAME, which is based on the Oscar winning film, certainly doesn’t gloss over the hard graft involved in reaching the very top.

But the sheer grit and determination of the youngsters is part of the show’s charm and the heart-breaking moments make the ending all the sweeter.

The storyline paints a realistic picture of life behind the scenes as an aspiring dancer, singer and actor.

The talented cast line-up, the high-energy choreography and unforgettable songs are part of the show’s success and the musical is definitely worth catching before it cruises out of Liverpool en route to its next destination.

It is billed as a musical ‘like you’ve never seen it before’ and, despite watching the film and enjoying the stage version before, nothing can prepare you for the infectious energy that pulses around the theatre.

FAME tells the tale of a group of youngsters who dream of seeing their names in lights.

It follows their pursuit of stardom as they attend the New York High School for the Performing Arts - known more fondly to its students as PA.

There is romance, heartbreak and a string of songs that will have you clapping along if you aren’t already stood on your feet dancing.

The cast was impressive but a particular mention must go to Alex Thomas, who played Tyrone Jackson.

On occasions he stole the show with his effortless dancing and easily got the biggest cheer of the night at the curtain call.

FAME will play at the Liverpool Empire until Saturday, April 19.
