Someone will be killed

REGARDING Mrs Green's letter in last week's Guardian about the crash waiting to happen.

The same thing happened to me when I was going to see my daughter in Latchford.

I nearly had a car run in to the right hand side of my car, which wanted to go on to the Riverside Retail Park, saying he was in front of me, but he nearly broke my overtaking mirror.

But the arrogant young man pulled up in front of me on the bridge, saying I was in the wrong lane, and should have gone on to the retail park, as there are two lanes.

He must have thought I did not know how to drive, being a pensioner of 67.

I then rang the police after I got home to ask if I was in the right lane, to be told there are markings on the road to look out for, but young drivers of today do not take the time to look out for them.

I told him that you cannot keep looking at the markings as well as driving safely, he then laughed saying that they have had a lot of accidents at the same spot.

So why doesn't the council change the road on to the retail park to only one lane so as to avoid confusion?

Something needs to be done before someone gets killed E J NEWENS Latchford

I would just like to say as a young driver it isn't always the age group that determines the way people drive, i have been cut up, dangerously overtaken and nearly hit many time on that round about by men and woman in their 30s and 40s. but i must agree the towns layout could be made better, helped by people paying attention to the roads!

Can it be too much to expect the council to have an understandable road layout?
After all are the council not obliged under health and safety regs to take care of people who may be affected by their actions?
In other words, if the road is poorly marked out then the council are just as guilty as the person who decides they are suddenly in the wrong lane !

As you approach that gyratory system along Bridgefoot there is adequate warning of which lane to be in to go whereever you think you want to go. The problem lies with the disproportionate volume of traffic directed into the nearside lane for Mersey St/Lythgoes Lane/Manchester Road, Riverside retail park, Latchford and Stockton Heath which splits near Cromwells statue, but A49 traffic can't keep in their correct lane because traffic in the outside lane will side-swipe you as you move over. There used to be a road-safety advert on TV when I had (dark) hair, which told us to get in lane and stay in lane. If more of us did that instead of making for the empty lane and barging-in when it suits us, this problem would simply go away. In the meantime hope for the best, make sure you're in the correct lane for where you need to go and always carry a loaded camera in the car and in the event of a bump ALWAYS PHOTOGAPH THE ACCIDENT BEFORE MOVING YOR CAR.
