POLLING stations across Warrington have opened for the General Election.

Residents have until 10pm tonight, Thursday, to vote for their candidates in Warrington North and Warrington South.

Tory David Mowat is defending a 2,750 majority in Warrington South, while Labour's Helen Jones looks to protect her 8,923 majority in Warrington North.

Mr Mowat is up against Labour’s Cllr Faisal Rashid, Liberal Democrat Cllr Bob Barr and Independent John Boulton.

Mrs Jones faces a challenge from Tory Val Allen, UKIP’s James Ashington, Liberal Democrat Cllr Stefan Krizanac and the Green Party’s Lyndsay McAteer.

Tens of thousands of residents are set to walk through the doors of stations in the town throughout the day, with results due to be announced following the count at Birchwood Leisure Centre in the early hours of Friday.
