COMEDIAN Eddie Izzard has been in town on the campaign trail for Labour.

The funnyman and actor visited Stockton Heath on Thursday, June 1, in support of Warrington South candidate Faisal Rashid.

He addressed a crowd of supporters outside the Mulberry Tree pub on Victoria Square and called for them to vote Labour in the general election on Thursday, June 8.

Izzard said: “We want to put policies in that really help working people but we’ve got to get elected to do that, and Faisal is a very good example of someone who should be elected.

“He is a good example of a modern 21st century person who is working to bring people together, to get communities working together and help people.

“We are for the many and not for the few – I’m doing ok for myself but I want everyone to do well, and that’s what we believe in.”

The 55-year-old had previously visited Warrington ahead of the 2015 general election, when he backed Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s predecessor Ed Miliband.

He added: “The country doesn’t want an election but Theresa May and the Tory party are forcing one upon it.

“She was trying to do strong and stable but she’s doing weak, wobbly and indecisive now.

“Where is she? She’s not turning up to do the debates because she won’t stand behind her own words and this is not the kind of future that we want.

“I think the Tories are worried now because the momentum is with us at the right time – this is it, and there’s everything to play for.”

Labour’s Warrington South candidate and former Mayor of Warrington Faisal Rashid said: “I welcome everybody who comes here to support me and the cause.

“The Tory party were very complacent when they called the election and they thought they would walk in with a very heavy majority, but the people of Britain have woken up.

“Jeremy Corbyn is now coming across far better than Theresa May, who is looking weak and didn’t even turn up for the last debate.

“When we’re meeting people on the doorstep, they are sick of seven years of austerity which hasn’t worked at all.

“As a resident, as the Mayor of Warrington and also as a local councillor, I’ve worked hard in this town and I’m really passionate about continuing to work for this town.”
