LABOUR'S Helen Jones has been criticised after tweeting about 'a chap with an east European accent' delivering Tory leaflets.

The party's Warrington North parliamentary candidate generated a big reaction on Twitter on Sunday following the tweet.

She said: "Tory leaflets delivered by a chap w/East European accent… who didn't know who their candidate was!

"Hope he's being paid the #LivingWage."

It had 89 retweets and 101 likes.

An outraged resident has criticised Mrs Jones.

He said: "I was extremely disappointed at that tweet.

"What has his nationality got to do with it?

"It's bordering on xenophobic. Not what you'd expect from a Labour candidate."

A spokesman from Warrington North Labour Party commented on the tweet.

He said: "It was clear that the tweet was highlighting the fact that the Tories are paying for material to be delivered by people who do not have a vote in the General Election and do not even know who the Tory candidate is.

"The Tory candidates clearly does not have enough supporters and volunteers to hand-deliver material, unlike Labour, whose material is entirely distributed by members and supporters."

The post was also brought to the attention of Val Allen, Conservative candidate for Warrington North.

She said: "I'm very grateful to Jeremy Corbyn's candidate here for pointing out that the Conservatives are leafleting all across in the borough.

"Anyone who didn't get a leaflet this weekend but is keen to find out about the strong, stable leadership of Theresa May's team can email me on val.allen@wnconservatives.org.uk."
