LIBERAL Democrat leader Tim Farron admitted he fears a Theresa May landslide is 'on the cards' on his visit to Warrington – but urged voters 'not to roll over'.

The Westmorland and Lonsdale parliamentary candidate made his way to Ash Acre Meadows in Latchford, off Marsden Avenue, this morning, Saturday, before a day of campaigning across the region.

He was welcomed at the £10 million Torus housing development by the town's Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Bob Barr, who will be standing in Warrington South in the General Election on June 8.

On his visit Mr Farron spoke of the ‘need’ for more affordable housing in the UK and highlighted ‘serious concerns’ over the Tories landing a huge majority when the country goes to the polls.

The 46-year-old said: "Warrington is a hugely significant place, a place I am fond of.

"This is a particular development which just shows what can and must be done across the country – 104 homes built on a brownfield site, supported by residents around it and affordable houses of different tenures.

"This is a chance to change the direction of the country and the challenges facing those seeking affordable housing.

"I think the two huge issues we face alongside housing are the NHS and social care and education, particularly schools.

"There are a million older people in this country who do not have their needs met – that is appalling.

"I don't think people in Warrington will need telling of the pressures on A&E and GP surgeries, as well as the lack of available care.

"The answer is two things.

"The NHS and social care need to be put back together so you have that efficiency, so you don't have old people stuck in hospital stranded.

"The other thing is frankly cold, hard cash.

“We kid ourselves if we think the Government in this country invests in health at an adequate level.

"We spend less on health and care than Portugal, Spain and Greece, much poorer countries.

"We have got the best staff and system in the world but we have a very poorly-funded system.

"We said a penny on income tax for health and social care will bring in around £6 billion every year.

"£3 billion is being taken out of our school budget over the next three years.

“Warrington looking at losing something in the region of 250 teachers in the next three years – I think that is terrifying.

"That is what you will get if the Conservatives win with a colossal majority."

Mr Farron praised Cllr Barr (LD – Lymm North and Thelwall) ahead of the election and delivered a speech to the party’s Warrington members.

And he warned residents of the potential ramifications of a Tory landslide.

He said: "The Conservatives are taking for granted places like Warrington, they don't need you, which is such an awful thing to say.

"They would love to win here but think they can get a colossal majority with or without places like Warrington.

"I am afraid a landslide on June 8 is currently on the cards.

"We should not roll over, there is a real need for a strong Opposition.

"The worst Governments in history are the ones with the worst Opposition so it is important the Liberal Democrats grow and fill that space."

Mr Farron also responded to the global cyber-attack and said the Government has 'failed' and 'not invested enough' in digital security.

The Liberal Democrats have this week confirmed the party would legalise selling and growing cannabis if elected.

In November 2015 Cllr Barr said introducing a regulated cannabis market could be the 'right approach' to combat illegal production of the drug in Warrington.

Mr Farron said: "All policies should be based on rationale and evidence.

"If you regulate cannabis then you take users out of a place where they have access to the most dangerous strains of cannabis and from dealers.

"This is about taking back control from criminal gangs to protect vulnerable people."
