FIREFIGHTERS have smashed their fundraising target after rowing a kilometre for every firefighter and paramedic killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York.

The team rowed in a relay for 24 hours, 59 minutes and 25 seconds to cover the 343km distance outside Birchwood Shopping Centre to mark the 10th anniversary of the tragedy.

After initially hoping to raise £1 for every kilometre, the team of full-time and on-call firefighters at Birchwood Fire Station have so far raised £1,067.
