We're walking on sunshine

SPARKLES and shimmers were never far from sight on Saturday as villagers came together to celebrate the annual Hartford Rose Fete.

A seasonal change in weather ensured sunshine for the day but onlookers would have been forgiven for not noticing as a flurry of befrocked boys and girls donned their best dress to captivate the crowds.

Retired Northwich NSPCC chairman Wendy Clarkson launched the festivities and Hartford Young NSPCC former chairman Jacqui Phillips had the privilege of crowning rose queen Devon Coverdale.

The Air Training Corps Band, which headed the procession from the Mid-Cheshire College campus, kept visitors entertained throughout the afternoon and the Hartford School of Gymnastics and Dancing 4 Fun gave toe-tapping and tumbling performances. Appalachian clog dancers also proved a crowd pleaser as they showcased their fancy footwork.

Spokesman Linda Barnes said: "Retiring queen Olivia Newey thanked all those who had supported her throughout the past year during which she raised more than £630. Future events should bring the total to more than £1,000.

"The committee, as ever, are very grateful for the support of everyone who has contributed in some way towards making this community event such a fun and a pleasurable occasion for young and old alike."
