School bids for specialist status

CULCHETH High School has launched a bid to gain specialist status which, if successful, would result in a large cash injection.

Staff and students have to raise £50,000 as part of the school's plans to become a humanities-focused school. If the campaigning is successful it will result in a £100,000 contribution towards the redevelopment of classrooms to improve ICT facilities including video conferencing.

It would also raise the profile of subjects such as history, English, and geography.

The fundraising campaign was launched last month with a non-uniform day, which raised almost £1,000.

Diane Schofield from the school said: "We decided to go for it in January and the bid has to be in by October.

"Our new deputy head teacher, Alison Middlemass, is co-ordinating the project and we think if it is successful, then it will be of benefit to the wider community as well."

The next fundraising event is on Sunday when a car boot sale has been organised starting at 9am.

Contact Diane on 761505 if you would like to book a place. Pre booked cars are £6 or £8 on the day.

There will also be a return concert in September with the award-winning Pemberton Old Wigan JJB Brass Band.
