PLANS to merge six primary schools in Crewe and Nantwich have been given the green light at a cost of more than £4million.
Cheshire County Council has given the go-ahead for the planned mergers to take place next January as part of its controversial Transforming Learning Communities strategy.
Broad Street Nursery and Infants will merge with Church Coppenhall Junior School on the Church Coppenhall site at a cost of £1.8million.
A second merger will see Gainsborough Nursery and Infants join with Gainsborough Junior at a cost of around £2.6million.
Underwood West Nursery and Infants will merge with Underwood West Junior School, with both continuing to use their existing buildings.
The mergers will go ahead next January after no objections were received after publication of notices.
Lead member for children's services, David Rowlands, said: "There has been broad agreement between all the schools involved about these new arrangements.
"All six can see the advantages which will take place in January next year.
"The new primary school for Underwood West will make use of its existing buildings while structural work to enlarge premises will need to be undertaken to create the other two primary schools."
