Hull Kingston Rovers 40 Warrington Wolves 36

WOLVES suffered a shock exit from the Powergen Challenge Cup on Sunday when they were beaten by National League One side Hull Kingston Rovers.

Paul Cullen's men went into the quarter-final tie at Craven Park as massive favourites against lower division opposition but they were beaten by the better side.

Logan Swann put the visitors in command in the opening stages, scoring from close range in the third and 13th minutes to give Wolves a 10-point lead with the aid of the first of four Chris Bridge conversions.

But the Robins replied when Ben Cockayne crossed in the 17th minute and Makali Aizue touched down a loose ball to edge them ahead four minutes later.

Stuart Reardon raced over from Bridge's pass in the 27th minute and a free-scoring match continued when Martin Gleeson supported Jon Clarke's break to score.

But a penalty from Gareth Morton, who kicked four goals in total, and tries from Jon Goddard and Byron Ford gave Rovers a 24-22 half-time lead.

That lead was extended four minutes after the interval as Morton touched down before Henry Fa'afili replied after leaping to grab Bridge's bomb.

But Wolves' hopes of rescuing a result took a nosedive as Ford crossed twice to complete a hat-trick and Jason Netherton put the home side 14 points in front with 21 minutes to play.

The margin was down to four points eight minutes later as Fa'afili grabbed his second and Michael Sullivan stretched over the line, but Wolves could not come up with the decisive score to give them victory.
