Composed young composers could claim title

GIFTED young musicians are vying for the coveted title of 'Young Composer' in an exciting competition.

The overall winner will receive £500 worth of vouchers which can be used to buy musical equipment - a keyboard, computer or PA system.

Dawsons Music Limited has teamed up with Halton Council to promote the event.

"This is not to be viewed as a competition even though there will be a substantial prize," said Tony Williams, director of education division at Dawsons.

"It is more a showcase to encourage original music making in the area where we know a great deal of talent exists."

Budding composers will be given the opportunity to record their work using state-of-the-art facilities at The Grange City Learning Centre in Runcorn.

The best composers will be invited to take part in a live performance at The Brindley.

The celebration of young musical talent challenges pupils from Halton's secondary schools, special schools and referral units.

Everyone who enters will receive a certificate of merit.

Three different categories include rock and pop, classical and world/urban.

Entries will be accepted from schools, classes, groups and individuals on CD, mini disc or electronically as an MP3 file.

Judges will be looking for musical content, style and presentation.
