More bans in pub scheme

A CONTROVERSIAL scheme banning irresponsible drinkers from pubs has claimed it's latest successes.

Three men have been issued with Pub Watch bans as Runcorn licensees unite to combat drink-related disorder.

"Pub Watch is starting to have a real effect in the town," said community support officer Paula Davies.

"Licensees are sending out a strong message that they and staff have had enough of abusive and criminal behaviour."

Licensees from Runcorn and Widnes involved in the scheme met recently to bar: a 39-year-old for a year for using drugs; a 25-year-old for six months for aggressive behaviour and another man in his twenties for causing damage and behaving aggressively.

And, last month an 18-year-old man from Weston Point was banned for a year and has now been charged with assault.

The ban, which applies to every member premises across Halton, caused controversy in March when a drinker was banned from a pub he had planned to use for his son's wake.

Mark Miles, 37, denied any wrongdoing and said he was being treated unfairly after being banned for three months from the Hallwood Raven.

But Pub Watch chairman Robin McLoughlin, licensee of The Studio, said: "These bans further enforce the message that threatening and criminal behaviour will not be tolerated.

"We will not hesitate to take similar action again if necessary."
