Granddad does the honours

A PROUD moment for a Warrington Guide was made all the more special thanks to a cross-country visit from her granddad.

Sarah Woofe, from Blackshaw Drive in Westbrook, is only the second recipient of the Queen's Guide Award in Warrington in the past seven years.

The 20-year-old had hoped her grandma, Brenda Woofe, would help present her badge and certificate at St Philip's School - however it was not to be as she died in January.

But her granddad, Colin Woofe, travelled all the way up from Essex for what Sarah described as an 'emotional' moment.

The 37th Warrington Senior Guide said: "My granddad came up to give me my award - it was important for me that he could be there.

"We were hoping my grandma could come to the initiation ceremony with the Countess of Wessex but she passed away in January.

"She knew I had passed the award and that means a lot to me because it was three years of hard work."

The Leeds University student has been helping the 37th Brownies as an assistant leader since she was 14 and completed a new craft skill of stitching, gained her pack holiday licence to take younger guides camping and undertook an expedition of Snowdon as part of the award.
