HERO FOILS THIEVES

A HERO foiled an attempted armed robbery at Asda Westbrbook

The 24-year-old man wrestled with a masked thief to prevent a cash box being snatched outside the petrol station of the supermarket on Wednesday.

Detective Sergeant David Walsh said: "This man wants to be an unsung hero. He had stopped for petrol and intervened when he saw the offender and jumped in to stop him making off with the money. These days it's quite rare that someone intervenes."

The robber and a companion appeared on foot on the forecourt at 12.45pm and targeted a waiting Royal Mail van.

One of the men then ran into a security guard, snatching the cash box he had been carrying to the vehicle.

A spokesman for Warrington police said: "A struggle ensued causing the offender to drop the cash box. Nothing was stolen and nobody was hurt."

The offenders escaped in a gold Vauxhall Vectra which was waiting on the road.

DS Walsh added: "It appears very little planning had gone into the attack, it was a random incident that lasted no more than 15 seconds."

Police believe three offenders were involved.

The first man is believed to be in his 20s, 5ft 8ins tall and wearing a grey Lacoste tracksuit and a balaclava.

A second man is thought to be of mixed race, 5ft 10ins tall and aged 20-22 years old.
