Unsung heroes honoured

SOUTH Cheshire's leading lights, civic dignatories and unsung heroes gathered at the Civic Hall in Nantwich for the annual Mayor's Oscars.

The lavish event is designed to recognise the efforts of volunteers, sportspeople and community workers in the borough.

Opening the ceremony Mayor of Crewe and Nantwich Maureen Grant said: "This event not only helps to celebrate all the good things in Crewe and Nantwich during the past year.

"It also serves to recognise the people who have made some really unique contributions to our borough, which have helped to improve our lives in so many different ways.

"The people we are honouring tonight are the unsung heroes of our community.

"People who have overcome adversity to achieve their dreams; who have given their time unselfishly to help individuals and communities; whose creativity and talent knows no bounds; who never seek reward, but always put others first."

Entertainment was provided by young singer Natalie Kent, from the Yvonne School of Dancing.

The event also raised funds for the Mayor's charities, Homestart and Leighton Hospital's medical admissions unit.

Amongst the winners was Frank Hough who was named Volunteer of the Year after devoting his energy to helping people with learning disabilities.

The award for Sports Personality of the Year was won by Sound and District Primary School, who fought off competition from Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle and champion swimmer Kaley Heath.

The school became the first from Crewe and Nantwich in 25 years to win a place in the North West Kwik Cricket Final.

The award for Community Initiative of the Year was won by the Cumberland Arena Regeneration Action Group.

The Allsorts Dog Training Club was named as Club of the Year, while the award for Environmental Initiative went to Tania Sayer of South Cheshire Friends of the Earth.

Bill Consterdine picked up two awards including the Sports Council Malcolm Case Trophy and the Citizen award.
