Time to wheel out some new bins

WHEELIE bins for garden waste will be introduced in the spring.

They are for garden waste like grass cuttings and tree leaves.

Warrington Borough Council will collect the bins and take them to recycling centres.

The green bins will be introduced over eight weeks from March.

The bin will be delivered to the north east first, followed by the north west, the south and finally the central area.

Collections will begin in April and May and, after varying waiting periods, fortnightly collections will begin.

The service will be suspended for two months during the winter when there is not much garden waste to collect.

The 240-litre bins will go to 56,000 properties in an attempt to boost recycling rates.

Warrington has average recycling rates and, like all local authorities, could face fines if it fails to meet targets and sends too much waste to landfills.

Clr Jeff Richards, executive board member for the environment, said: "It will take a few weeks for it to be rolled out but I would encourage everyone to participate, especially as the summer is coming and we all have extra garden waste during this time.

"The aim of this scheme is to increase our recycling rate by seven per cent, which would take the town's overall rate to nearly 30 per cent.

"It will prevent around 8,000 tons of garden waste being sent needlessly to landfill - instead it will be composted and turned into soil improver."
