Head says parking ban could end daily problems

A HEADMASTER wants parking banned on one side of Bexton Road to ease congestion during the early-morning school run.

Bob Edgar believes it would help rush-hour drivers trying to negotiate parked cars and school children in the chaotic streets near Yorston Lodge Primary School.

Partially banning parking, he says, would give drivers turning out of Cranford Avenue a clear view of the road ahead.

Students at Knutsford High already start school at 8.40am - 35 minutes earlier than pupils at Yorston.

Mr Edgar says that has helped but he believes more can be done to help alleviate the problems in one of the most congested parts of Knutsford.

He says council officials were wrong to reject local calls for Cranford Avenue to be made one-way.

"It would make sense because Stanley Road is already one way the other way," he said.

At last week's meeting of Knutsford Town Council, Councillor Barbara Austin accused certain drivers of adding to the early-morning chaos by parking on the pavement too close to Bexton Road's junction with Cranford Avenue.

"There are four vehicles that are constantly parking on part of the footpath," she said. "It is an obstruction."

Councillors had asked Knutsford Inspector Craige Arterton to monitor traffic in the area because they were concerned about the number of badly-parked cars.

But police responded by saying that although it was congested, there was no evidence of people breaking the law.

Last week Mr Edgar said there were traffic problems outside every school in Knutsford.

He said Yorston had created a drop-off zone for parents in St John's Road so that cars did not add to the problems in Bexton Road.

The school had also increased the number of parking spaces on site to 14 by extending the car park into part of the garden.
