Bowls club 'on verge

of folding'

A TWENTY-year-old bowls club is in danger of folding due to low numbers and a lack of funding.

Bewsey Barns Indoor Bowls Club, based at Bewsey Community Centre in Old Hall, was founded in 1986 with the help of Warrington Newtown.

It aimed to promote indoor bowls as a community activity and at first it flourished, with more than 30 members at its peak.

But now Brian Robinson, the club's secretary, fears it may have to close.

The 70-year-old, from Ross Close, said: "Over the years people have moved away and some members have died.

"We hire the centre from Great Sankey Parish Council and we rely on enough subs from members to cover this charge and our other expenses, such as refreshments and renewing equipment when necessary.

"At present we are only averaging five members a week which just covers the centre hire."

The club is appealing to people of all ages and abilities to come and enjoy friendly games of short mat indoor bowls every Thursday evening at 8pm.

The centre is temporarily closed but Bewsey Barns is holding a 'have-a-go' open night on Thursday, March 2, and all are welcome.
