Gary needs your help

A WINSFORD man who recovered from prostate cancer is urging other men to get involved in the fight to improve detection and treatment of the disease.

Gary Steele, chairman of the Leighton Hospital Prostate Cancer Support Group, believes thousands of men are dying each year who could be saved.

He said: "We are presently in the same situation as women with breast cancer were 20 years ago.

"But they got off their backsides and formed formidable groups and lobbied the Government of the day.

"Men in the past six years have just rolled over and died in our thousands in accordance with the Government's compliance to do nothing.

"We save the country millions of pounds by doing nothing and accepting the inevitable when a disease such as prostate cancer is lurking in our bodies."

Recent research carried out by the House of Commons public accounts committee has shown prostate cancer victims receive worse treatment than any other cancer patient.

Gary said: "The disclosure of research revealing prostate cancer victims receive the worst treatment of nearly all cancer patients is no surprise to me as I have had first hand knowledge of it for some time.

"I don't care what Government officials or so called experts say about what we should or shouldn't do regarding testing for prostate cancer.

"My experience tells me every man over 45 should insist their doctor sends them for a PSA blood test once a year."
