Appeal after nasty attack on husband and his wife

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man was hit in the head with a paving slab during an incident in Winsford.

The assault took place at 11.30pm on Friday when a man was walking along Grange Lane with his wife.

The 41-year-old victim was walking ahead of his wife when she was approached by a group of around five people who began to abuse her.

He confronted the group but was punched and kicked while on the ground, then a paving slab was dropped on his head.

The 42-year-old woman was also punched in the face during the incident.

Both the man and woman were taken to Leighton Hospital for treatment and discharged the following day.

Det Sgt Dave Snasdell, from Winsford Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: "This was a very nasty and unprovoked assault on a husband and wife who were walking home after a night out.

"A paving slab was dropped on the man's head so it is a very serious incident."

The two men in the group who carried out the attack are described as white, 6ft, of medium build and with short hair.

They are both believed to be in their late teens or early 20s and one of them was wearing a grey hooded jumper.

Det Sgt Snasdell said: "If anyone saw or heard anything about this incident then they should contact us immediately."

People with information should call police on 01244 612599.
