Speed checks slow drivers

NEW speed recording gear has cut traffic speed in Congleton Borough.

The claim comes from Supt Graeme Sims, chairman of the borough-wide Community Speed Watch.

A portable speed indication device sits at the roadside and displays and records the speed of passing vehicles.

Community volunteers are able to identify vehicles breaking the speed limit, and warning letters are sent to them.

The Speed Watch initiative is part of Congleton Community Safety Partnership.

"The aim of these letters is to educate drivers about their speed and speed limits," said Supt Sims.

"The partnership has bought a portable speed indication device, which has been used across roads in the borough.

"It has reduced the average speed of vehicles passing through its sensor.

"Our goal is to implement the project across the five towns in the borough."
