Ian prepares for 161 miles in six days

IT could well be the toughest foot race in existence, but a Risley chemical engineer is set to attempt the world famous Marathon Des Sables.

Ian Jones will tackle the 161-mile, six-day endurance race across the Sahara desert in April.

The 28-year-old will have to complete the event, which is equivalent to five-and-a-half normal marathons, while carrying everything he will need for the duration apart from a tent on his back in a rucksack, including food, clothes, medical kit and sleeping bag.

The BNFL worker, who normally completes in triathlons, signed up for the race after watching a documentary on it and says he is looking forward to taking part.

He said: "By the time I go I will be training by doing 70 miles a week as well as swimming and other bits and bobs.

"Hopefully I will give myself the best chance I can when I get on the starting line."

Mr Jones, who lives in Manchester, will be raising funds for Oxfam when he competes in the race. If you wish to sponsor him log on to www.justgiving.com/ian
