DRIVERS in Winsford and Middlewich are being warned that the main link road between the two towns will be closed for more than a month.
The A54 Middlewich Road will be closed between its junction with Road One and Clive Lane and its junction with the A533 Bostock Road, Stanthorne, to allow resurfacing work to take place
The road will be closed from March 6 until April 13 and pavements and bus stops will also be improved as part of the work.
A Cheshire County Council spokeswoman confirmed diversions will be in place using the A533 and the A5018 Wharton Park Road.
She said: "Because the road is so narrow we aren't able to do what we usually do and close half of the carriageway and install some temporary traffic lights.
"We have to close the road to carry out this work and diversions are in place."
County councillor Tony Hooton believes the diversions should not cause significant delays for motorists.
He said: "These are major road repairs that desperately need doing.
"It will cause some inconvenience in the short term because the nature of the site means the road has to be closed, but normal road users will quickly find the diversion is not much longer.
"When this road was closed a few years ago and a diversion was in place it worked very well and I see no reason why that shouldn't be the case this time.
"I think people who use that road regularly will realise that this work needs doing and will see the benefits once it is completed."
