Graphic designer Helen Louise Burder claimed the post in a by-election following the retirement of Labour's Clr Mary Bowhay-Merritt after 16 years' service.
She polled 334 votes, while Liberal Democrat candidate Glynn Roberts, of Highbank Road, had 296 of the 924 votes cast - three more than Conservative hopeful Kathyrn Terri Birtwistle, of Gladstone Street.
Kingsmead resident Helen, who lives with her husband in Moreville Close, expressed her gratitude to those who helped her secure the sought-after role.
She said: "I was just so ecstatic to have won. It was very nerve wracking on the night and I was delighted with the result.
"I would like to say a big thank you to the Labour supporters who came out to the polling stations and those who returned their postal votes in time for the by-election.
"With the help and support I received from my agent Arthur Neil and the Labour group, it has meant Labour still has a councillor representing the Leftwich and Kingsmead ward."
Helen, 38, has pledged to put the views of residents first as she embraces her new position.
She added: "As promised in the campaign I will do my best, working with the residents to resolve the issues that people have raised.
"As I live in Kingsmead myself, on the doorstep of Leftwich, I am aware of action that needs to be taken and will act on those issues.
"Anyone who wishes to contact me is welcome to call 01606 330951."
The result was revealed by northwichguardian.co.uk on Friday.
