Tribute to Nantwich kindheart

A MEMORIAL bench was unveiled for popular Nantwich volunteer worker Burt Phillips.

Burt, who died two years ago at the age of 72, lived in Nantwich most of his life and was named Citizen of the Year 1998 for his exceptional contribution to the community.

His widow, Janet, cut the ribbon on the new bench outside Nantwich Library and declared that Burt would have very much approved.

She told the Guardian: "Burt loved to sit and rest while doing the shopping, watching the world go by.

"This bench is a lovely tribute to him, especially as it faces The Gables where he spent a lot of time."

After retiring, Burt got involved with the Meals on Wheels initiative

And he was a keen organiser of trips for the elderly at The Gables senior citizens club.

Janet said: "If anything needed doing Burt would push himself forward to help out.

"He was very well-known and liked around town."

The bench was funded by the senior citizens club.

Cllr Bill McGinnis said: "It was a really nice occasion and people were happy remembering Burt, who was a real character.

"People like Burt are desperately needed in local communities or they will fall apart."
