Fencing could be erected around a building site in Knutsford to protect ancient woodland.
Neighbours in Longridge said council officials had agreed to block off St John's Wood while nearby land was redeveloped.
"It is a very positive step for us," said resident Helen Wilson.
"There is a lot of community concern and we obviously want to ensure the woodland is not disturbed in any way."
She claimed the fencing would be put up once Knutsford Housing Association started work.
But no one was available at Macclesfield Borough Council yesterday (Tuesday) to confirm the news.
Miss Wilson said residents had met environmental council officers to discuss the future of the wood.
"We're hoping that once this work is completed we can come up with a proper management plan," she said.
About 50 people have now shown an interest in forming a group to promote the woodland.
Meanwhile, on Saturday skips will arrive in Longridge so residents can clean up the wood.
The last clean-up took place six months ago when four skips were filled with rubbish.
If you want to help, meet at the bottom of The Dip footpath on Saturday at 10.30am.
