Tories tacx cut pledge

BOROUGH Conservative have pledged to slash the council tax levy for the coming year.

Tory leader Cllr Brian Silvester said they would introduce a 1% reduction - the first drop in the tax for years.

He said: "Since the borough council tax was introduced in 1993/94 it has increased by a massive 84%.

"Inflation in that time has increased by just 36% so the borough tax has increased by more than twice the rate of inflation.

"Because council tax rises have so outstripped the rise in pensions and wages, local people have become progressively poorer.

"The main aim of the Conservative Group is to reduce the council tax, whilst maintaining and improving basic services that matter to local residents.

"We believe that this can be done by the council working more efficiently and effectively, by better housekeeping and by employing less staff."
