Emilly ready to take the plunge for African trek

PLUCKY teenager Emily Pendergast is to tackle a daring abseil to help raise cash for her expedition to Africa this summer.

Emily, aged 15, from Wistaston, will participate in Challenge Abseil in Buxton on Sunday, ahead of her Malawi journey in July.

Her voyage is being organised by World Challenge Expeditions, and the abseil is one of a series of moneymaking activities to raise £3,500 to cover the costs of the trek.

Emily will be assisting the local community in Malawi to recover from the current famine, which has afflicted the country.

Work on previous expeditions has included building an adventure playground, clearing jungle trails, tracking rhinos, repairing schools and teaching at a local orphanage.

The programme is designed to develop team members' essential life skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication, motivation and time management.

Students complete a money management programme before departure, which encourages them to raise the money for their fees themselves without relying on parents.
