Taxi figures released

WARRINGTON Borough Council has finally released the accounts demanded by Warrington Taxi Drivers Association.

The association is going to employ an accountant to look through the books to see how the taxi licensing committee has spent its money over the past five years.

The association had to fight to get the information, winning two rulings from the Freedom of Information Commissioners.

Simpler versions of the accounts had been released previously, but they gave figures that the association wanted to question - for example, saying there was 'miscellaneous' expenditure of £10,500.

The accounts were released last Tuesday in a very detailed form - if the borough council had not released them by the end of the week it faced prosecution for contempt of court and daily fines.

The taxi association wanted to see the accounts because its members pay a fee each year, which subsides the licensing committee.
